Natural and Spiritual Sonship | Jay Fesperman (2/3)
Now, I have said all this to bring us to a very practical place of understanding our roles as SONS in our relationship to our Lord and to one another. You see, we are told (Romans 8:14-15) “Those who are lead by the SPIRIT OF GOD are SONS OF GOD. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the SPIRIT OF SONSHIP. And by Him we cry, ‘Abba, Father!'” Then verse 16: “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are GOD’S CHILDREN.”
Now, let’s get real practical. We teach parents to acknowledge that God gave them their children. No matter what the circumstances, God gave us to our parents. We were His to give, and He chose to whom we were given! So, let’s deal with us where we are. He has, in a sense, “fostered” us to our parents until we come into a maturity of our own, to a place where we are responsible for our own decisions, but. . .
Becoming mature doesn’t terminate our SONSHIP. Even though Jesus declared, “All authority (fatherhood) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. . .” You see, in the “unto us a child is born” passage, Isaiah establishes this delegation of the Father’s authority. In Isaiah 9:6, “His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, EVERLASTING FATHER, Prince of Peace.” This, the SON OF GOD! This FATHERHOOD given to Jesus for the church did not set Him free from His relationship with God, His Father. He remained a SON.
So, no matter to what exalted role or position of authority you may be called, you must never abandon the role of SONSHIP. Just as Jesus was expressing the role of obedience and authority at the same time, so must we, once we have been given a place of authority. The Holy Spirit in US can be both the SPIRIT OF THE FATHER and the SPIRIT OF THE SON. When we are ministering the Word, Jesus says, “It is the Spirit of the Father speaking through you.” But as we are seeking the call, and the wisdom and power to minister, we must acknowledge our need of God through the SPIRIT OF SONSHIP. The Spirit of Fatherhood is AUTHORITY! The Spirit of Sonship is OBEDIENCE! Jesus said, “The one who rules (should be like) the one who serves. . .I am AMONG you as One Who SERVES.” (Luke 22: 26, 27).
Out of our sonship to God through Jesus Christ, our Lord, we are called into relationships with others. These are natural relationships. First, as a natural son, we learn how to be a SON OF GOD. Then, as a SON OF GODS, we grow into other responsible relationships, such as becoming a husband or wife. In this case, we are told to “leave father and mother. . .and become one.” But we don’t give up SONSHIP TO GOD. We’ll need it more than ever! Then, as we become “one flesh”, we will come into FATHERHOOD (or its female counterpart), but we still don’t give up SONSHIP. The same goes for singles with roles of authority placed upon you. The more authority we have, the more we need to exercise SONSHIP with our authority.
And so we grow up into maturity – into COMPLETENESS – yet remaining a SON OF GOD!!! Walking out our SONSHIP – our life of OBEDIENCE as husband or wife, father or mother, priest, prophet, or provider. For a person to be in authority, he must be a person under authority, exercising this authority under the divine Guide, the HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD.
