The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot put it out. (John 1:5 ISV)
Larry was busy hanging lights around our Christmas tree this weekend. We had purchased some new strings of lights to make our tree even brighter. So, to add to the lights already on the tree, he painstakingly placed them on a few bare spots.
The thousand shining lights staring back at us were gorgeous for about thirty seconds…and then…BOOM! Darkness. The circuit was obviously overloaded! So, he rushed to Lowe’s and purchased a new circuit breaker and BOOM! All was bright and shiny again. The beauty of the lights on the tree lit up the darkness of our living room. We loved it!
When asked to write this Christmas message the next day, I was in the midst of contemplating our tree lighting experience and then began meditating on the scripture, the light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot put it out.
Jesus came into this world of darkness and literally blew the circuits of the shackles and failings of the Law. His entire life was one of blowing the circuits wherever He went, whenever He spoke, or whatever occasion called for His “not of this world” wisdom.
He said such things as: The only way to the Father is through me. BOOM! He overloaded the circuit! I and the Father are one. BOOM! He overloaded the circuit! I only do what the Father tells me to do. BOOM! He overloaded the circuit! Jesus answered, I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. BOOM! He overloaded the circuit! Let him who is without sin cast the first stone. BOOM! He overloaded the circuit!
As far as His life goes: Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit. BOOM! He overloaded the circuit! He was born of a virgin. BOOM! He overloaded the circuit! He forgave sinners. BOOM! He overloaded the circuit! He drove demons into a herd of pigs. BOOM! He overloaded the circuit! He healed the sick, even on the Sabbath. BOOM! He overloaded the circuit! He raised people from the dead. BOOM! He really overloaded the circuit!
And then, they tried to extinguish the “Light of the World,” He was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, despised and rejected by man, and the chastisement of our peace was stabbed into Him, making us whole; the angels refused to help Him; His own Father turning His face away from Him; He profusely bled and bled and bled out with our sins.
The darkness rejoiced for three days.
But wait! Surely this could not be! BOOM!… His own blood overloaded the death circuit…
All our sins and guilt were removed! BOOM!
God’s wrath was removed! BOOM!
We were reconciled to the Father! BOOM!
We were redeemed from the curse of the Law! BOOM!
He triumphed over the rulers of darkness! BOOM!
He became our Substitution! BOOM!
So, my friends, because God’s only Son, the Light of the world, came and conquered the darkness, we can joyfully sing…
Joy to the world! The Lord is come!
Let Earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing!
Merry Christmas, Everyone!
