A Devotional from Susan Pons
The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” But Jonah ran away from the Lord…(Jonah 1:1-3)
Jonah’s father’s name was Amittai, which means, “My truth”; for God’s prophets should be sons of truth. What an honor that God would send His word to Jonah to be delivered to Nineveh…a city great in number; great in wealth; great in power—but, sadly, great in wickedness. The book of Jonah shows us that peoples who were outside of the Mosaic covenant relationship with Jehovah were accountable to Heaven’s moral law. But…God so loved the world. God so loved Ninevah. God so loves America. Because Jonah had received the word of the Lord, he became responsible for its delivery to a people who were on the edge of the wrath of God destroying them. Three profound lessons in less than three verses: (1) God gives words of warning to peoples who go against His moral laws; (2) He expects His word of warning to be delivered; (3) But…the chosen deliverer of His warning should not run away.
Neither should we.
