What impresses us? Are they the right things?

Jesus wants to know. Am I impressed with what man can build?

Really? That impresses me?

As he walked away from the Temple, one of his disciples said, “Teacher, look at that stonework! Those buildings!”

Jesus said, “You’re impressed by this grandiose architecture? There’s not a stone in the whole works that is not going to end up in a heap of rubble.” | Mark 13:1-2 (The Message Bible)

I admit it. I am impressed with grandiose architecture. Big buildings are beautiful and impressive. We have a president who builds them.

King David knew. “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman keeps awake in vain.” Psalm 127:1 (NASB)

Will any of it last? Nope. Not a stone. Not a girder. Not a single bit of plumbing. It will all get torn down. It will end up in a heap of ruble. It doesn’t last.

Human beings can achieve many things, though any achievement which disregards God is futile. God always achieves what he intends. Anything of eternal value needs God-given resources.

We should celebrate spiritual achievements! Do we get excited by the power of Jesus and the Holy Spirit? Let us give a big shout out to amazing miracles.

There is a ton of God-things to get excited about. Here are just a few ideas.

  • Romans 15:19 (NASB) — In the power of signs and wonders, in the power of the Spirit; so that from Jerusalem and round about as far as Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of the Messiah.
  • Luke 10:17 (NASB) — The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Master, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”
  • John 14:12 (NASB) — “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.
  • Acts 14:3 (NASB) — Therefore they spent a long time there speaking boldly with reliance upon the Lord, who was testifying to the word of His grace, granting that signs and wonders be done by their hands.
  • Acts 20:26–27 (NASB) — “Therefore, I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God.”
  • 2 Corinthians 3:1–3 (NASB) — Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some, letters of commendation to you or from you? You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men; being manifested that you are a letter of the Messiah, cared for by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
  • 1 John 2:13–14 (NASB) — I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father. I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
  • Revelation 2:19 (NASB) —  “I know your deeds, and your love and faith and service and perseverance, and that your deeds of late are greater than at first.”
