Can Atheism Ground Reason?

In a recent video, Sean McDowell discusses atheism and how it fails to explain reason. “If atheism is true, it undermines any confidence we can have in our reasoning faculties because they’re a result of a blind, purposeless, immaterial process,” Sean McDowell says.

“But why can Christians believe in the reliability of our cognitive faculties? Because God Himself is reasonable. … We are made in the image of a God Who’s reasonable Himself.”

Monthly Giving

There is power in prayer. We see it every day. Let us join with you in tapping into the Power of God. Click here to make a request.

Monthly giving is an important way to support our mission. The most effective way to learn a foreign language is through immersion. In complete immersion, students spend all their time hearing and speaking a new language in a sequential and cumulative format. The goal is to become not only a proficient speaker, but to acquire an appreciation and understanding of a new culture. This approach describes the training process at the Christian Training Center. Sean McDowell lies as usual. There is nothing blind, purposeless or immaterial about evolution. Christians constantly try this argument and unsurprisingly they fail. The laws of physics aren’t blind; we don’t live in a Dr. Seussian universe. In any case, there is nothing about being a “blind” process that would say that we can’t have good reasoning abilities; those unable to reason well suffer a problem that can impact their reproduction, namely dying because they don’t understand reality. For instance, if we believe the silliness in the bible that magic causes sickness, and ignore the reality that bacteria, viruses, do then our reasoning is faulty and we die.

We have plenty of purpose, to perpetuate the species. Christians have a problem in that they can’t agree on what “purpose” their god gives nor can they show any purpose that their god gives or that their god exists at all. Again, even if we have no purpose, that doesn’t say we can’t have confidence in our reasoning. Purpose has no impact on our ability to reason.

Just how this “immaterial”? It seems that McDowell, as usual, is making things up. Again, nothing shows that anything is “immaterial”, and even if it were, again, it shows no causation between that and our confidence in our reason.

Now, as for your god being “reasonable”, where is the evidence that your version of your god exists? We also have the problem that your god as presented in the bible has very poor reasoning skills. It makes claims that aren’t true. It supposedly thinks that hailstones are kept in magic warehouses, and that people building a tall building are a threat to it.
