Is the Holy Spirit real?
There are many misconceptions about the identity of the Holy Spirit. Some view the Holy Spirit as a mystical force. Others understand the Holy Spirit as the impersonal power that God makes available to followers of Christ.
What does the Bible say about the identity of the Holy Spirit? Simply put, the Bible declares that the Holy Spirit is God. The Bible also tells us that the Holy Spirit is a divine person, a being with a mind, emotions, and a will.
The fact that the Holy Spirit is God is clearly seen in many Scriptures, including Acts 5:3-4.
“Ananias,” Peter asked, “why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the proceeds of the land? Wasn’t it yours while you possessed it? And after it was sold, wasn’t it at your disposal? Why is it that you planned this thing in your heart? You have not lied to people but to God.” | Acts 5:3-4
In this verse Peter confronts Ananias as to why he lied to the Holy Spirit and tells him that he had “not lied to men but to God.” It is a clear declaration that lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God.
We can also know that the Holy Spirit is God because He possesses the characteristics of God.
For example, His omnipresence is seen in Psalm 139:7-8,
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.”
Then in 1 Corinthians 2:10-11, we see the characteristic of omniscience in the Holy Spirit.
“But God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”
The Bible describes the Holy Spirit as a person who has been present with the Father and the Son since before time began. The Spirit is integral to all of the things that God is described as doing in the Bible.
The Spirit of God was present at and involved in the creation.
Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. | Genesis 1:2
And again here in Psalm 33:6:
The heavens were made by the word of the Lord,
and all the stars, by the breath of his mouth.
The Holy Spirit moved the prophets of God with the words of God
Because no prophecy ever came by the will of man; instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. | 2 Peter 1:21
The bodies of those in the Messiah are described as temples of God because the Holy Spirit is in us.
Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own. | 1 Corinthians 6:19
Jesus was clear that to be “born again,” to become a disciple of the Messiah, one must be born “of the Spirit”
Jesus answered, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” | John 3:5

Leadership the Jesus: A Faith at work series — Looking how to focus your faith at work? | This series of leadership programs focuses on leadership skills that drive the purpose and passion for work as laid out by Jesus and based on sound scripture. We might see faith and work as estranged. It can be frustrating. But, in truth, faith and work should share a crucial aim: to see the unseen at work through the power of the Holy Spirit. Nothing new has been made without faith in God. Nothing unseen has been seen without work. When the force of what we do hits why we do it, we wither, or we flourish. Learn more here.
