What qualities should we look for in leaders?

It is a good thing to want to be a leader in the assembly (church) that is called out of this world. Paul makes that clear to Timothy.

This applies to someone who wants to be an overseer, who has other church leaders reporting to them. The word is episkopos. It is defined as an overseer, supervisor, ruler, especially used with reference to the supervising function exercised by an elder or presbyter of a church or congregation.

Paul has a very comprehensive list. I know I don’t qualify but that is okay.

God has standards and that is a very good thing. We ought to pay attention to see if our overseers meet these criteria.

If anyone wants to provide leadership in the church, good! But there are preconditions. ~Apostle Paul | 1 Timothy 3:1 (The Message Bible)

So what are the qualifications? What skills do overseers need?

  • Above reproach
  • The husband of one wife
  • Temperate
  • Prudent
  • Respectable
  • Hospitable
  • Able to teach
  • Not addicted to wine
  • Pugnacious and not a bully
  • Gentle
  • Peaceable
  • Free from the love of money
  • Manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity(but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?)
  • Not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil.
  • Must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil

~Apostle Paul | 1 Timothy 3:1-7

Leadership the Jesus: A Faith at work series — Looking how to focus your faith at work? | This series of leadership programs focuses on leadership skills that drive the purpose and passion for work as laid out by Jesus and based on sound scripture. We might see faith and work as estranged. It can be frustrating. But, in truth, faith and work should share a crucial aim: to see the unseen at work through the power of the Holy Spirit. Nothing new has been made without faith in God. Nothing unseen has been seen without work. When the force of what we do hits why we do it, we wither, or we flourish. Learn more here.
