About the Speakers

Bobby Jones, NBA Hall of Fame Inductee, and Wife Tess Jones

Bobby and I both grew up in Charlotte, NC, center of the Bible Belt.  This meant that we also grew up in church.  But not until I graduated from college did I understand what being saved really meant.

I joined a Bible Study with other students the summer after college and noticed that they prayed as if they were talking to Jesus sitting right there beside them!  I had never heard such personal, friendly prayers before!  It only took two months for me to realize I didn’t know Jesus as Lord and Savior in spite of all those years in church and Sunday School!  In 1973 I gave my life to Christ and started reading the scriptures.  They suddenly came to life for me!!  It was a true “scales falling from my eyes” experience!

Bobby and I had been dating about 5 months when I was saved, so I shared my new faith with him and a little later he came to know Christ as his personal Savior!!

We were married in July of 1974 and moved to Denver, where Bobby played basketball for the Denver Nuggets.  Moving half way across the country was a new experience for this girl who hadn’t ever been more than an hour from home.  The Lord knew what Bobby and I needed as new believers and introduced us to Gayleen and Claude Terry. Claude was a teammate of Bobby’s and both he and Gayleen were deeply rooted Christians.  The Lord also introduced us to the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ leadership who took us under their wing as family. Our faith was stretched and strengthened through the Terrys’ example and the challenges that FCA put before us to share our faith openly.  Because we made church a priority whenever Bobby was not on the road or playing in a game, the Lord surrounded us with strong Christian friends.

When Bobby was traded to Philadelphia in 1978, the Lord was still in full control, unbeknownst to us!!  What we didn’t realize at the time was that, because of Denver’s high altitude, Bobby had developed a seizure disorder linked to the extra strain on his heart.  Moving to Philadelphia improved his  heart condition and he never had another seizure while playing ball!  Also, the General Manager of the Sixers who initiated the trade for Bobby was a strong, outgoing Christian, as was his wife.  Once again, the Lord had gone before us to provide mentors who introduced us to other believers and to Bible Studies!!

You might think that the atmosphere of professional sports is toxic, but where there is great darkness, there is great opportunity to shine the light of the Gospel.  Regular Bible studies with other players in the Philadelphia area were our spiritual food.  Bobby and Julius Erving started pre-game chapels, which spread to other parts of the NBA.  A friend and I offered a Bible Study for any players’ wives who wanted to attend.

After Bobby retired, we moved back home to Charlotte, where Bobby was able to do what he loves more than anything – coaching and mentoring young kids and leading them to Christ!
