Exemplifying what it means to be a “Hero of Today”: Gerhard Silver
In the spring of 2016, Gerhard Silver proudly walked into the CTCI office and paid for the Heroes of Today summer program out of his own pocket. He was the very first one to register for the program this year. It was a moment of awe for the staff, that this young man – at thirteen years of age – had worked and saved his birthday and Christmas money so that he would be able to attend Heroes that summer.
Gerhard first visited CTCI with his mother and sister in 2015 to attend a two week Train to Reign Family Program. After a wonderful two weeks, Gerhard was inspired. He returned home and began putting into practice simple principles that he had been taught. He began rising early for morning devotionals and workouts. He learned to face challenges and conquer everyday fears. Instead of coming home from school full of fear and discouragement, Gerhard had joy and a sense of purpose. At such a young age, he was an example to his family and friends – a true hero of today. He began saving up his money so that once he turned 14 the next year, he would be able to attend the Heroes teen program.
Five weeks short of attending Heroes, Gerhard was out conquering one of the many fears that God was leading him to face. Learning to fly was just one of the many victories Gerhard was experiencing in life. On June 11th, God in all His sovereign love chose to bring Gerhard home through a tragic plane crash that would also claim the lives of his father and grandmother. Only Gerhard’s sister, Gabriella, would wake to faces on this side of eternity.
July 18th, the opening night of the Heroes Teen Program, was a powerful and impactful night for all those present as they learned about Gerhard’s life and story. Together, they hoisted a new Heroes Cross in the amphitheater with a plaque commemorating Gerhard. His powerful testimony was an inspiration, paving the way for all those young people to begin to learn what it truly means to follow Christ, the Real Hero of us all.
The money that Gerhard personally raised to attend the program has become the beginning of an ongoing Heroes of Today Scholarship for teens. Although his financial sacrifice will help others, it is his testimony that will continue to inspire all those who desire to honor Jesus with their lives. All donations given to the Heroes of Today Gerhard Silver Scholarship will be directed towards Teen programs at Christian Training Center International. Donors will receive a tax-deductible receipt.
CTCI is honored to share the life of Gerhard Silver with many others, and we will continue to post stories of those that are impacted through this fund. Our hope to see this nation transformed through the grace of God and the testimonies of Heroes like Gerhard that have chosen to follow Jesus!
