How can we be delivered from evil and the evil one?

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” ~Jesus

Source: Matthew 6:13 (ESV)

Jesus taught us to pray. Jesus gave us the template. The prayer is a part of the Jesus Manifesto (Matthew 5-7). This is the core of what I need to say to God. One of the pillars is to ask God to deliver us from evil (or as most translators agree) the evil one.

If we are born of God, can the evil one touch us?

Watch Sonny Ramsay teach on 1 John. Can the evil one touch us?

We know that everyone who has been born of God does not sin, but the one who is born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him. We know that we are of God, and the whole world is under the sway of the evil one. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know the true one. We are in the true one—that is, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.Little children, guard yourselves from idols. 1 John 5:18-21

What is evil? How do we overcome it?

Jesus stands firm against evil. Jesus challenges us to do the same.

As God’s children, we walk according to this command: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21).

God is love (1 John 4:8). The absence of love in a person is un-God-like and therefore evil.

And an absence of love manifests itself in unloving behavior. The same can be said concerning God’s mercy, justice, patience, etc.

Jesus is clear with us. We must pay attention. Because God is good, we can overcome evil.

How can good come from evil?

Frank Turek talks about the morally sufficient reasons that God has to allow some evils.

If God is good, why doesn’t he stop evil? One answer is that he’d have to stop me and you because we do evil every day.In order to allow the possibility for love, God grants us free will, which gives us the capacity to do evil as well. But can God really bring good from the evils we commit? Here is a short answer to that really long question:

Our programs are like an immersion into a new language – the language of living in Jesus.  The goal is fluency in the language of relationships.  Programs share a sequential vision, building an understanding of relationships and family culture.  The foundation is an encounter with Jesus.  This encounter is the means for both insight and vision.  Encountering Jesus leads a radical change in living and relationships.

Am I a student of good?

Seek good and find delight

Seek good and find delight

There are many things we can be students of. Seeking good is God’s goal for us.

God wants us to go after wisdom and good like there is no tomorrow. This is the main thing about the main thing.

How do we spend our time? What kind of TV do we watch? What are we searching for on the internet?

Are we seeking good and God?

Of course, there is a consequence to being a student of evil. It is sad but God warns us that if we seek evil we will become evil.  We will find what we seek.

It is our choice.  Jesus alerts us that there is a way that leads to life. That way is Jesus.

May we seek good. May we find delight. So be it.

“The one who seeks good finds delight; the student of evil becomes evil.” ~King Solomon (Proverbs 11:27)
