How will we see God? What does it take?

How will we see God? What does it take?

Man after Gods heart
A man after God’s heart

Jesus is clear. His apostle John is clear. My heart testifies to me what I ought to do. There is no lack of clarity what Jesus commands regarding love and compassion. It is written on my heart by God.

The Bible mentions the human heart almost 300 times. In essence, this is what it says: the heart is that spiritual part of us where our emotions and desires dwell.

Does Jesus know what is in our hearts? Is He impressed?

This all came about because Jesus didn’t wash his hands before he ate. Seriously. This was a huge Jewish ritual from the old covenant. Jesus was focused on the new covenant and the Kingdom of God that he was ushering in. Jesus was already moving on.

When he finished that talk, a Pharisee asked him to dinner. He entered his house and sat right down at the table. The Pharisee was shocked and somewhat offended when he saw that Jesus didn’t wash up before the meal. But the Master said to him, “I know you Pharisees burnish the surface of your cups and plates so they sparkle in the sun, but I also know your insides are maggoty with greed and secret evil. Stupid Pharisees! Didn’t the One who made the outside also make the inside? Turn both your pockets and your hearts inside out and give generously to the poor; then your lives will be clean, not just your dishes and your hands. Source: Luke 11:37-41 (The Message)

Jesus knows our hearts. Jesus knows what motivates us. Jesus came to get us right with God, His Father. Jesus does this by speaking the truth to us. One day, Jesus called Peter, Satan. When I follow Jesus, I don’t get a break. I get challenged.

Is gossip just bad or evil?

Image result for brood of vipers

Oh no! Here we go. If I could just keep quiet. If I could just control my tongue. I love to gossip like the next person. Beyond gossip, sarcasm is for me a killer. The sharpe rebuke that shuts someone I care about dearly up or provokes them to anger. Yikes!

  • The gossip of bad people gets them in trouble; the conversation of good people keeps them out of it. | Proverbs 12:13 (The Message Bible)
  • Evildoers are trapped by their sinful talk, and so the innocent escape trouble. (NASB)

How can we have assurance of a renewed heart?

Heart

Jesus calls on us to be pure of heart. We need need His regenerating Spirit and the blood of His sacrifice to even have a chance.

Being pure in heart involves having a singleness of heart toward God. A pure heart has no hypocrisy, no guile, no hidden motives. The pure heart is marked by transparency and an uncompromising desire to please God in all things. It is more than an external purity of behavior; it is an internal purity of soul. May it be so for me.

According to the Bible, the heart is the center not only of spiritual activity, but of all the operations of human life. “Heart” and “soul” are often used interchangeably (Deut. 6:5; 26:16; comp. Matt. 22:37; Mark 12:30, 33).

What does it mean to be pure in heart?

Is my heart pure? That is an essential issue to address. Jesus lays it out in His manifesto (Matthew 5 — 7).

Am we clean, blameless, unstained from guilt? Not on our own but we have been declared innocent because of the work of Jesus and we are being sanctified by His refining fire and His pruning.

Now that is some good news! Jesus gives us clean hands. Jesus gives us a pure heart. Jesus promises we will see God.

What is God’s goal for our hearts?

Heart, dedicated, caring and committed

Heart, dedicated, caring and committed

It is God’s goal for us to align our hearts with our words in a way that is acceptable to God. We are to love Him and everyone else with all our hearts.

Do our words reflect that? Does God’s love in our hearts cause us to think amazing things and then act in a way that reflects His love?

Beyond what we have to say, is what we are thinking and meditating on acceptable to God? It starts with our heart.

Without a right heart, the rest is all futile.  It continues with our thoughts. It translates into our words.

May we align God’s love in our hearts with what we say.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Psalm 19:14

I want a 60 minute worship service. Where is my heart’s focus?

Heart's Focus

Heart’s Focus

Oh man, this cuts to the bone. What is our heart focused on? Why are we so impatient with God?

It is amazing, when we want to do something, the amount of time we are willing to put in on something.

How much TV do we watch compared to how long do we pray every day? I know the answer to the question for me. My heart isn’t focused on Jesus like it should be.

It really does come down to is what is important to Jesus not what is important to us. Will I follow His lead? Will I sacrifice for Him?

Will I? Will you?

God’s goal for us is for us to focus on Jesus. That is it. No how long it takes.

“The same people who want 60 minute worship services rent 2 hour movies; watch 3 hour ballgames. It’s about our heart’s focus!” ~ J. Bull

Our programs are like an immersion into a new language – the language of living in Jesus.  The goal is fluency in the language of relationships.  Programs share a sequential vision, building an understanding of relationships and family culture.  The foundation is an encounter with Jesus.  This encounter is the means for both insight and vision.  Encountering Jesus leads a radical change in living and relationships.

Am I being stupid or willfully stupid?

Jesus asks a question

Jesus asks some stunning questions. We don’t exactly know how to respond. Some days, there aren’t great answers. Jesus is waiting to hear what we think and say. His questions deserve an answer.

Jesus explains so many things to us. He challenges us to hear, really hear, what He is saying.

Jesus is blunt. He is straightforward. He really want us “to get it”. He has given us the Holy Spirit to help.

God’s goal for us is that we focus on our heart. It is all about our heart. That is the main thing.

May we listen and understand. It is important.

Jesus said, “Are you being willfully stupid? Don’t you see that what you swallow can’t contaminate you? It doesn’t enter your heart but your stomach, works its way through the intestines, and is finally flushed.” (That took care of dietary quibbling; Jesus was saying that all foods are fit to eat.)

What kind of men is God looking for?

A man after God's heart

A man after God’s heart

What is the BIG THING our heavenly Father is looking for? He is desperately seeking men and women after his own heart.

How will I know what is in His heart? Have a relationship with Him. Know what makes Him tick. Seek to please Him at all costs.

There is nothing else that really counts.

God’s goal for is that I seek after Him. There is nothing more important. To know God’s heart, I have to know God and what is important to Him. I have to get God into my heart.

The good news is the Holy Spirit reveals God to me. God is not a secret because of that.

May I be a man after God’s own heart!! May I do what He asks me to do.

“The LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people …” 1 Samuel 13:13-14

Is my heart in it?

Heart, dedicated, caring and committed

Heart, dedicated, caring and committed

Jesus challenges us to have our heart in the right place with God and everyone else. It is all about our relationships.

Just saying the right thing will not make a difference. Jesus demands that our heart be in it. Jesus knows that if our heart is in it, the results will come.

It isn’t the “big show” we make of saying things. Do we do the right God-things? Is our heart in it even if no one knows about what we do?

Another challenge is just going through the motions. We pray but is rote and meaningless. We’re just saying the words. We read the scripture but it doesn’t speak to us. We go to church and stand at the right times but are emotionally detached from our brothers and sisters in Jesus.

Emotion flows from the heart. Joy is a big deal. Jesus brings joy into our lives. Joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit.

God’s goal for us is for us to guard our heart. Everything starts with our heart. God wants men and women of God who have a heart for Jesus.

May my heart be in it every day!!

“These people make a big show of saying the right thing, but their heart isn’t in it.” ~Jesus | Mark 7:6
